Teaching and Learning in Reception
Starting Reception
Starting Reception is a big step for children and their families, from those first days of settling in, making new friends and discovering their classroom, to becoming confident and independent learners ready for Year 1, Reception is a year full of exciting experiences, new discoveries and wonderful moments of growth.
Learning Through Play and Exploration
Our curriculum combines purposeful teaching, play and hands-on experiences, giving children opportunities to explore, investigate, ask questions and follow their interests. Children develop their knowledge and skills across all areas of learning while building confidence, friendships and independence.
Throughout the year, children develop their Phonics, reading, writing and mathematical understanding through engaging whole-class, small-group and practical activities. They enjoy a wide range of stories and books, develop their vocabulary and communication skills, and apply their learning through meaningful play.
Growing in Confidence and Independence
As the year progresses, children become increasingly confident in making choices, solving problems, working with others and persevering when things are challenging. They develop their fine and gross motor skills through creative activities, construction, physical play and outdoor learning.
We also encourage children to become independent in managing their belongings, personal care and everyday routines, while learning to make healthy choices and care for themselves and others.
Ready for Year 1
By the end of Reception, our aim is for children to feel confident, capable, curious and excited about learning. We support them throughout the Summer Term with the transition to Year 1, helping them become familiar with new routines and expectations and take greater responsibility for their learning.
Every child’s journey is unique, and we celebrate their individual achievements while nurturing the skills, knowledge, resilience and love of learning that will support them throughout their school journey.
