History and Geography Curriculum

History

At Shoreditch Park Primary School, our intent is to produce a high-quality History education for all learners in order for them to gain the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past and we are passionate that our children should be able to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence and develop their own perspective and judgements. In History pupils will understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change and also the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

History at Shoreditch Park Primary School, our planning is supported by the Rising Stars scheme of work.  Our curriculum is implemented in such a way which allows for teacher to present both disciplinary knowledge and the substantive facts for each unit. Children have the opportunity to evidence their learning in a variety of ways including verbal, written, pictorial and diagrammatic responses. Teachers use ASPIRE Oracy objectives to encourage rich talk in classrooms in every lesson and adapt their teaching as they deem necessary. Teachers allow for children to revisit learning from previous year groups and this is supported by the Rising Stars Scheme of work which logically builds and revisits prior learning. This helps the children develop a good understanding of complex historical ideas such as cause and consequence, as well as complex terms such as ‘empire’ and ‘migration’.  Teachers use Target Tracker statements which are in line with the National Curriculum to support their planning, teaching and assessment of lessons and children’s knowledge. History is taught discretely across the school to ensure that children build an understanding of the discipline and the enquiry skills associated with studying the past. We support the children’s understanding for how and why Hackney came to be the way it is today by grounding complex historical concepts in a local framework.

At Shoreditch Park Primary School, we believe the impact of our History teaching provides cultural capital for our children to become educated citizens of the world. In 2019, we worked towards achieving our Heritage Schools Award which was a significant achievement for us.

Geography

At Shoreditch Park Primary School, our intent is to produce a high-quality geography education that inspires pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, which will remain with them for the rest of their lives. At Shoreditch Park Primary School, we aim to challenge children’s stereotypes about countries across the world. We want our children to identify how countries develop a rich economy and to identify global trends. Our units encourage children to learn about countries of their origin and culture. Teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. As pupils progress, their growing knowledge about the world should enable them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments.

Geography at Shoreditch Park Primary School is supported by the Rising Stars Scheme of work that has created in partnership with the Geographical Association. Our curriculum is implemented in a way which allows for children to constantly revisit the concepts of place, space and scale in many different contexts. Teachers ensure that lessons have a balance of core knowledge and the children’s sense of space. Children have the opportunity to evidence their learning in a variety of ways including verbal, written, pictorial and diagrammatic responses. Teachers use ASPIRE Oracy objectives to encourage rich talk in classrooms in every lesson and adapt their teaching as they deem necessary. Through the Rising Stars Scheme of work, children revisit learning from previous year groups and build on their understanding of the complex geographical ideas and how these are related. Teachers use Target Tracker statements which are in line with the National Curriculum to support their planning, teaching and assessment of lessons and children’s knowledge. Geography is taught discretely across the school to ensure that children build an understanding of the discipline and the enquiry skills associated with the subject.

At Shoreditch Park Primary School, we believe the impact of our Geography teaching provides cultural capital for our children to become educated citizens of the world. With support of fieldwork and our pupil voice groups, we empower our children to be decision makers and global citizens who constantly consider their (and others’) impact on the planet.
